Science for Alaska Summer Series 2026

For the third year, Explore Fairbanks and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute are joining together to host the Science for Alaska Summer Series, a presentation of free public talks throughout the summer at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks.

The Geophysical Institute has hosted the Science for Alaska talk series for over 30 years as one of its largest public outreach efforts. Topics for this summer include the 2025 Tracy Arm landslide, an overview of UAF’s High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program facility in Gakona, Alaska’s recent extreme winter in the context of climate change, and rocket launches at Poker Flat Research Range.

The talks will be held on the second Saturday of each month from June through September at 11:30 am. In-person presentations will be held in the theater at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center at 101 Dunkel St and will include a 30-minute presentation with extended time for questions.

The dates and topics for the presentations are as follows:

  • June 13th | Michael West | The 2025 Tracy Arm Landslide-Tsunami
  • July 11th | Evans Callis | HAARP Facility Overview & Research
  • August 8th | Rick Thoman | Alaska’s Cold Winter in a Warming Climate
