Miami named second-best place to retire in the US

It should come as no surprise given the state’s legendary popularity with retirees, but the top three cities to retire in the United States are all in Florida, with Miami coming in second between Orlando and Tampa.

In a recent analysis, personal finance company WalletHub compared 182 U.S. metros on a range of 45 key metrics under four broad categories: affordability, activities, quality of life and healthcare.

Miami scored high based on the abundance of retiree-friendly activities, coming in first for adult volunteer opportunities, art galleries and fishing facilities per capita.

Miami — and all Florida cities for that matter — also received points for tax friendliness, since the state has no estate or income taxes and has low taxes in general. Miami is the sixth-most walkable city in the rankings and has plenty of easily accessible public transportation as well.

“For older residents who want to remain active and socially engaged, those amenities can make a meaningful difference in day-to-day quality of life,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said. “Miami also has relatively favorable care costs, ranking 18th for homemaker services. Its access to care is another strength, particularly its No. 1 ranking for home healthcare facilities per capita and No. 21 ranking for geriatric hospitals.”

Scottsdale, Arizona, and Casper, Wyoming rounded out the top five places to retire, while the bottom five cities for retirement were Rancho Cucamonga, California; Fresno, California; Newark, New Jersey; San Bernardino, California; and Stockton, California, respectively.
