Lexi Hackett grew up in Sitka, Alaska, spending her childhood on her parents’ longline boat and making her first deckhand trip at 15. She has fished seasonally for over 15 years and holds a Master of Science in Nutrition from Bastyr University. She is also a founding member of the Local Fish to Sitka Schools program, which has brought locally caught fish into school cafeterias since 2010.

Lexi and her husband Adam run Fish & Family Seafoods, a Sitka-based operation rooted in hook-and-line fishing and a hands-on approach to quality. Every fish is pressure bled, carefully cleaned, and blast frozen within an hour of being caught, preserving the flavor from ocean to table. For the Hacketts, fishing isn’t just a livelihood; it’s a way of life built around family, community, and responsible stewardship of Alaska’s waters.

Trawl Free Table

Ingredients:

  • 4 sweet potatoes, cut into fries
  • Olive oil
  • 16 oz. halibut (bones and skin removed)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ c flour or almond meal; divided
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ c hemp hearts
  • Salt and pepper

Zesty Sriracha Sauce

  • ¼ c plain yogurt
  • ½ c sour cream
  • 2 tsp sriracha
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 3 cloves garlic, pressed
  • ½ tsp salt

Creamy Salsa Dip

  • ¼ c plain yogurt
  • ¼ c sour cream
  • ½ c salsa
  • ¼ tsp salt

Directions:

For each sauce, mix together and chill. Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut sweet potatoes into matchsticks. Shorter pieces will stay crispier. Place sweet potato fries on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Be sure to give the fries plenty of space for better results. Place in the oven to start cooking while you prep halibut.

Total cook time for sweet potato fries is 40 minutes; halibut is 20 minutes. Cut the halibut into strips and pat dry each piece. Beat egg into a large bowl. Divide flour or almond meal in half; place in two shallow bowls. Add salt, pepper and all spices to the first bowl of flour. Mix the hemp hearts into the second bowl of flour; season with salt and pepper. Dip all sides of each halibut bite into the spiced flour, and then the egg, and then the hemp heart mix. Place each halibut bite onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. After the fries have cooked for 20 minutes, add the halibut bites to the oven and cook for another 20 minutes. Serve with sauces.
