America celebrates its birthday with observances and special events nationwide timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The festivities stretch across all 50 states, with plans as varied and vast as the country itself. In Alaska, organizers have zeroed in on the state’s connection to baseball as one way to celebrate. A traveling exhibit “Alaska’s Fields of Dreams: Baseball in America’s Far North” has run the bases across the state. the traveling history exhibit of Alaska’s baseball connections is presented as innings, the nine freestanding, retractable panels explore Alaska’s unique baseball history and its evolution in places such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, Nome, and the Pribilof Islands. June 26, 10 a.m.: Head to Glen Alps trailhead for a guided hike up Flattop Mountain in Chugach State Park to raise the America250 flag.
June 27, 10 a.m. to noon: PLAY BALL! youth clinic hosted by Major League Baseball and RBI Alaska at Anchorage Football Stadium
June 27, 6:30 p.m.: Week of Dreams Opening Ceremonies at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage, followed by an ABL game at 7:30 p.m. between the hometown Anchorage Glacier Pilots and the Mat-Su Miners.
June 25 – June 28: American Legion Alaska 259 Tournament at Mulcahy Stadium, as some of Alaska’s top teams take on outside competition in this annual tournament.
June 28 1 p.m.: Knock Down & Skin ‘Em softball game at Mt. View Lions Community Park. The name calls back to a team formed in Alaska in July 1868 – just a year after Alaska became U.S. territory. The team was based on St. Paul Island and was in the middle of a game on the day in 1942 when the island was forced to evacuate by the U.S. Navy.
June 28 4 p.m.: Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks vs. Peninsula Oilers at Loretta French Park in Chugiak followed by a special Movies in the Park screening of “The Sandlot” hosted by Eagle-River Chugiak Parks & Recreation, also at Loretta French Park.
June 29, 5 p.m.: Week of Dreams reception at Alaska Native Heritage Center.
June 30: The Week of Dreams Golf Tournament at Moose Run Golf Course is a fundraiser to benefit the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame Healthy Futures program and area Little Leagues.
It all leads in to Anchorage’s annual Independence Day celebrations in Eagle River and at Delaney Park.
